Restriction & Risk - Darrius' Bagged Toyota GT86

“Restriction & Risk”

Darrius’ Bagged Toyota GT86
2nd May 2020

The last few months have been quite uneventful, with the world crumbling and trying to condone to the task of being insanely bored- I mean, social distancing, it has not been a great time for many creatives that are so familiar with stimulus and freedom. So as you can imagine, the moment the government even mentioned the possibility of reducing restrictions allowing 50km of travel for leisurely activities (which includes photography), I was itching for an excuse to get out and create.

4pm, Pelican Point. Its a beautiful 24 degree autumn evening. The sky is clear and the sun is golden. You can image with the lifting of restrictions there was quite the commotion of people on the marina and the parks nearby. I had hoped this wouldn’t be an issue but we’ll address that as we need.

Darrius’ arrived on time in his GT86, the custom wrap job still holding proud and now being bagged on some Work CR3p, the little Toyota coupe is looking quite the part! We were a bit early for sunset so using the sunlight through the trees I aimed for some clean feature shots where the detail from the sunlight was required.

As the sun began its descent, we had to confront the issue of the general public which was swarming the point. Out of politeness and trying to time between people launching boats and jet skis, we had to time our attack. Starting on one ramp, I prioritised the rear of the vehicle during the beautiful golden hour of light shining nicely over the boot, this ramp was also better for shooting towards the city/over the horizon.

I wanted to use the other ramp for the front of the car, however when Darrius’ was turning around to wait for yet another boat to be hitched, the lighting and the colourful sky over the horizon was a really soft/muted setting.

After half of Redcliffe had finished launching boats and the ramp was free, we reversed the 86 down and began using the last of the sunlight for the day. I had an angle I have used previously shooting the back of the car facing up towards some trees in the background, I really like using the water out of focus as a foreground and leading towards an almost silhouetted shadow of the car. Using this darkness and the shadows of the water to emphasise the white half of the car, it was a great contrast to finish off the shoot.

Thank you Darrius for supporting me and teeing up a shoot. No one will ever know how much I appreciate all the support I receive with my photography and I hope to keep surprising you with bigger and better things to come!

Until next time,

A bit more about Darrius and his Toyota

What made you choose the 86? Was it your first choice?

“I had always liked the look of the first 86 when i was in high school I would tell everyone that I already bought one and had it in the garage at home and that I would take it out one day. It wasn’t my first choice was thinking of getting a golf but having just coming off losing my license I thought the 86 would probably be better.”

How long have you had the 86? What have you done to it in that time?

“I have had the 86 for a year and a half. I have done alot of little mods to it like stars in the roof and repainted the inside of my headlights and other little things that I wanted to do myself, most of my major mods to the car are the half wrap, bags and wheels”

Do you have any more plans for the car? Do you have a goal you are trying to achieve with it?

“Yeh I feel like will always have plans for the car, theres always one more thing or the next idea I wanna do. Always had a goal of building the car to a level where I can go to events like status and shoot with dated

Do you enjoy living in Brisbane? Why/Why not?

“I enjoy it! I have never traveled interstate in Australia so I cant say it’s better then anywhere else, but I’m happy with it”

Describe a typical day involving you and your 86;

“I take it everywhere when I can, it’s a good car to drive! However I hate driving it in the rain, some of the worst driving experiences in the 86 were getting caught out by the weather driving it home”

Imagine yourself in 10 years, do you hope to still have the 86? What else would you like to have owned or accomplished by then?

“I would love to still have the 86 in 10 years! A priority is that I would want to have a nice house and a family by then, however cars will always be around me even if they aren't my main focus forever ”

If people want to see more, or follow the build, where should they go?

“Best place to see more would be on instagram @issa_slow86”
